Badachu Park, well known for its eight ancient Buddhist temples and natural scenery, is located at the south foot of the Western Hills in the suburbs of Beijing.? It covers an area of 332 hectares and its highest altitude is 464 metersl.? It has become one the first Key Cultural Relics Protection Units of Beijing since the founding of New China in 1949.
Badachu Park, encircled by Cuiwei, Pingpo, and Lushi hills, the extended part of The Western Hills, is famous for both its eight well-preserved ancient temples and its twelve natural scenes.? To praise the park the ancient people compared the three hills to a ‘grand mansion’, the eight temples to the antiques in rooms, and the twelve scenes to the garden in the mansion.? It is also said that the Fragrant Hill Park is splendid for its artificial work, while Badachu is beautiful for its natural scenes, which are better than those in any of the scenic spots in the Western Hills are.
Badachu enjoys warm winters and cool summers.? Owing to its fertile soil the park has a rich vegetation of over 400,000 arbor trees belong to 80 species.? 590 trees of 18 rare valuable ancient kinds grow healthily. For instance, the white bark pine in Chang’an Temple, the horse chestnut tree in Linguang Temple, the gingko in Dabei Temple and the Chinese pistache in Zhengguo Temple have all lived for over 800 years, and are still in healthy state.? Nearly 140,000 red-leaf trees, such as smoke trees, torch pines, and maples cover the whole mountain slopes with splendid redness after the autumn frost. Besides the red leaves, the blossoms of the apricot in spring, of magnolia in summer, and of the chrysanthemum in autumn, and other seasonal flower blossoms also contribute to the wonderful vegetation of the park.
The eight ancient temples were first built at the end of Sui Dynasty (581—618) and the beginning of Tang Dynasty (618—907), and were renovated in Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.? Lingguang, Dabei, Xiangjie, Zhengguo temples were ordered to be built by emperors.? The tooth relic of Sykyamuni Buddha used to be kept in Zhaoxian Pagoda of Liao Dynasty, which was burned down by eight imperialist invaders in 1900.? After the founding of New China late premier Zhou Enlai approved the building of the new Buddha Tooth Pagoda.
In the late 1980s the Reflecting Green Lake and the Hundred Flower Garden were built, and in the early 1900s the Climbing cable car and the First Chute slide were constructed and open to the public successively.? Later, new archways and gates to the temples, an imitation of the ancient wood structure, were also erected.? After ten years of development, the present park is better than its past and has become a first class park in Beijing. In the new century the park has built a Space Capsule, and hotels with conference centers.? The new concept of all-in-one services including dining, accommodation, travel, relaxation, entertainment and bodybuilding is introduced to meet the various demands of visitors at different consuming levels.? Badachu Park has become one the best places where Beijing residents can rest and entertain themselves.
